May I Never Forget

My grandmother once told me
that an elephant never forgets.
While I didn’t believe her at first,
I’m starting to think she told the truth.

My grandmother once told me
that if I don’t practice the piano,
I will have to solve an equation
for every minute of time I waste.

My grandmother once told me
that every Irishman was a poet,
but that they only practice the craft
after meeting someone they love.

My grandmother once told me
that when I decide to read a book,
I learn to hear what others say
without interrupting their thought.

My grandmother once told me
that if I listen closely in the night,
I can hear wild coyotes cackling
over their small, helpless prey.

Why do I remember what
my grandmother once told me
if she only said it once?

There is only one explanation:

I am an elephant.
