And what did they come bringing you this year?

And what would you have wished for,

had you even been asked?

And what would be the proper response?

'Nothing, thanks.' 'I've everything I need, thank you kindly.'

'Thank you for asking; couldn't be better.'

My young student when I posed the same question

stood up on a chair to show me how long

she'd wish her hair to be

beyond her little bottom, to mid-thigh

the very place my gray chemise

grazed my legs the first time

I danced for you

morning light pouring through

kitchen windows

my inner sun at last matched

by the light of day.
